Using data from death certificates, law enforcement records and court documents, the Ventura County Star mapped more than 10 years of homicides.

Listing names, the date of the crime and approximate address, Star reporter Scott Hadly and Senior Web Developer Troy Singleton plotted 330 homicides on an interactive map for readers. Because of the nature of the reporting, some information is still being updated, but the map gives readers a sense of the scope of violence in some neighborhoods.

The map does not, however, show the rate of violent crime.

While Oxnard recorded about 43 percent of all the homicides, it also is the county’s most populous city. Indeed, the rate of violent crime in the city has declined, and in some cases, the numbers of reported crimes have declined despite the rising population.
